Fundraising challenge events have become a dynamic and engaging way for individuals and organisations to raise funds for various causes. These events combine philanthropy with a sense of adventure, pushing participants to step out of their comfort zones while making a positive impact on society.

Different types of fundraising events

Whether it’s a charity run, a cycling marathon, a climb up a mountain, or even a daring skydiving expedition, these challenges capture the attention and enthusiasm of participants and supporters alike.

<script async src=”https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-2091453910472645″ crossorigin=”anonymous”></script> <ins class=”adsbygoogle” style=”display:block” data-ad-format=”fluid” data-ad-layout-key=”-gw-3+1f-3d+2z” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-2091453910472645″ data-ad-slot=”7602833826″></ins> <script> (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); </script>

Fostering community

One of the key aspects of fundraising challenge events is the sense of community they foster. Participants often form teams, creating a supportive network that encourages each member to reach their fundraising goals. This community spirit not only enhances the overall experience but also amplifies the impact of the fundraising efforts. The shared commitment to a cause builds camaraderie among participants, making the challenge more than just a physical feat—it becomes a collective effort to make a difference.

The importance of storytelling in fundraising events

These events also leverage the power of storytelling. Participants often have personal connections to the cause they are supporting, and their stories serve as powerful motivators for potential donors. Through social media, blogs, and other platforms, participants can share their journey, creating a narrative that resonates with supporters and inspires them to contribute to the cause. The storytelling aspect adds a human touch to the fundraising process, making it more relatable and emotionally compelling.

Fundraising challenge events are not only an effective way to raise funds but also contribute to raising awareness about critical issues. The physical challenges participants undertake act as symbolic representations of the obstacles faced by those affected by the cause. This heightened awareness helps draw attention to the cause and encourages a broader audience to get involved. Overall, these events create a win-win situation by combining personal growth, community engagement, and philanthropy to make a positive impact on the world.

London to Amsterdam Cycle, July 2016 – Day 4

The final day of London to Amsterdam was upon us, and with only 52 miles to cycle today, the team were buzzing over breakfast.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-30

From our hotel, the team cycled along cycle paths, skirting around the north of Rotterdam. Passing through a couple of small towns, they followed numerous canal paths and crossed over a few railway crossings.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-32

Near the village of Weteringbrug they stopped for coffee overlooking a gorgeous canal. The coffee was fantastic, but the apple pie…well it was simply divine. Our break was made even nicer by the super-friendly waitress.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-49

We stopped for an obligatory team photo next to a windmill.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-34

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-48

Crossing the bridges was a lot of fun!

 london-to-amsterdam-cycling-33

The section after lunch was superb. The road follows a picturesque canal, line with beautiful houses and leisure boats aplenty. Locals sat outside soaking in the sun whilst others passed by on their boats having a relaxed Sunday down the canal.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-36

The team regrouped after eight miles of blissful cycling along the canal before regrouping just before an impressive bridge. We all waited as the incredible feat of engineering lowered back down after allowing a sizeable boat through.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-35

We soon arrived at our lunch spot where a local festival provided some musical accompaniment in a shady spot under the trees. This would be our last lunch together and, with only 8 miles to the centre of Amsterdam (and bellies still full of apple pie), the team were raring to push on to the finish point.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-37

The cycle lanes definitely got busier as we entered the city, the group certainly needed to keep their wits about them as cyclists, tourists and scooters began to clog up the lanes.

The group were soon arriving at the infamous IAmsterdam sign near the Van Gogh museum. They’d made it, cycling over 280 miles through four countries.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-40

We stopped for plenty of photos as everyone congratulated one another on an amazing achievement.

London to Amsterdam Cycle – Day 3

On the third day of the London to Amsterdam ride, the team decided on having a team photo outside the hotel in Bruges.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-20

By now the team’s bodies were becoming used to the daily rigours and routines of a multi-day tour. They knew today was going to be tough, with 86 miles to cycle, a ferry and some exposed sections along The Netherlands northern coast.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-21

Although dry, there was a headwind forecast, the team knew this would have a considerable impact on their ride. Within a few miles the team had crossed over the border into their fourth country of the trip, The Netherlands.

At 22 miles, they stopped for a brief coffee before boarding the ferry from Breskens to Vlissingen after which the route crossed numerous bridges with views of estuaries and the North Sea. Despite the lack of hills, this section was particularly exposed, and the team faced a headwind the whole time.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-22

Soon they arrived at lunch and rested with a well-deserved feast out of the fierce wind of the day.london-to-amsterdam-cycling-23

After lunch the team continued on through sand dunes, passing holidaymakers learning to windsurf (it was a good day for windsurfing!) and sail. Hundreds of other cyclists were also enjoying the sunshine which made for some relatively busy sections along the coast.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-24

The team still found time to pose for some action shots however…

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-25

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-26

After the final break of the day, the team pushed on through the outskirts of Rotterdam and to our hotel for the evening.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-27

A nearby Italian restaurant provided them with a carb-fest recovery meal before heading to bed in anticipation of the final day’s ride into Amsterdam!

London to Amsterdam Cycle – Day 2

The team gathered outside our hotel in Calais after breakfast. It was already warm, with temperatures around 16°C, so the suncream was already out in force. After a brief about the day’s ride, the team got underway, cycling back into Calais and past the beautiful town hall.

 london-to-amsterdam-cycling-10

On the other side of Calais the roads opened up and they caught a glimpse of the jungle migrant camp to the north of us. This section of riding is through agricultural land, with potato, lettuce and maize fields as far as the eye can see. Rene took the lead up at the front for a while, enjoying the mid-morning sun.

 london-to-amsterdam-cycling-11

After a short while the team entered the town of Dunkerque and stopped at the British War cemetery for a refill of water, snacks and to take photos.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-14

The cemetery has graves from the First and Second World Wars and commemorates the historic evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France in May 1940.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-15

Dunkerque is a busy port so there’s always a fair bit of traffic and the team got caught in a long line of cars as they left the town. Soon they were flying along, stopping for a photo as they crossed the border into Belgium. A number of white horses welcomed the team to their third country of the trip.

A boy flew past as he drafted a scooter and Rene, John and Tom had a go at catching him up (well, why wouldn’t you?)

The team soon arrived at our lunch spot, just before the town of Veurne. It was only when we stopped did we realise how hot it was, so the shade of the gazebo proved to be a welcome relief.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-

With lunch over, the team then cycled into the pretty town of Veurne. Food stalls and music filled the cobbled streets as we passed through, at which point John realised he wasn’t wearing his sunglasses…Tom nipped back to where we had lunch and accidentally picked up a pair of Anna’s from the back of the van (whoops). Anyway, Anna agreed to lend the glasses to John and the team cycled on.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-45

After lunch the route continued along country lanes through picturesque towns and alongside beautiful canals.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-16

The team soon entered the outskirts of Bruges, passing under an ornate arch and over a bridge.

They’d made it – day two was over and all that was left to do was get a beer in the hotel bar.

london-to-amsterdam-cycle-51

Later that evening the team strolled into the centre of Bruges, passing the cathedral and main square.

london-to-amsterdam-cycle-50

The team had huge portions of beef and fish stew at a traditional Belgian restaurant before a well-deserved rest in the hotel.

London to Amsterdam Cycle, July 2016 – Day 1

The team met at Blackheath Common – Jess, Jasmine, Jonathan, Julie, Rene and Anna arrived on time and ready to get riding. After loading the van and a briefing from leader Tom and Danny, the group quickly got underway onto the mean streets of London.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-2

They were soon underway!

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-3

The team had soon left the outskirts of London and, despite some rather aggressive beeping from unnecessarily angry drivers (one of which was teaching a student to drive!), made excellent time to the first stop of the day at 20 miles.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-5

At 42 miles the team pulled into lunch at a record time – 11:45 – they were flying! Luckily the temperature had cooled wince the previous two hottest days of the year, and some cloud cover provided some respite from the sun.

At lunch there were some interesting looking sandwiches made, including – “a bit of everything really – houmous, coleslaw, cheese, salad, ham, tuna…”…the list went on.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-4

The roads opened up after lunch as the group continued their ride into rural Kent. Passing numerous orchards and open farmland, they were soon riding through the walled city of Canterbury. From here there were a couple of significant climbs to overcome, but the team were obviously determined.

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-6

On one of the backroads, Jess took a tumble down a downhill section. She nonchalantly brushed it off and got on with the final ten miles, including the biggest climb of the day (Julie commented at the port – “did we go over the hill you were talking about” – ha!).

london-to-amsterdam-cycling-7

The port at Dover was extremely busy, with a backlog of lorries lining the approaching road. The team were soon through passport control however (the power of a bicycle) and boarding our ferry to Dover.
